The Kade District Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu, on Friday sentenced two persons to a total fine of GHC 1,200 for stealing six bags of cement. The items belonged to the Kade Trinity Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana valued at GH¢46.40. Mohammed Ali, a fitter and Joseph Ackah, unemployed, initially pleaded guilty with explanation but later changed their pleas to guilty and the court convicted them on their own plea. One Sumaila said to be an accomplice of the two convicted men is on the run but a bench warrant has being issued by the court for his arrest. Police Inspector Francis Cobbina, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant was a member of the Church and lived at Kade Zongo with the two convicts. He said for sometime now, the church had been experiencing theft of building materials and on October 16 last year at about 0130 hours, the complainant had a call from his brother who was returning from Accra. The message was that he had seen two men carrying cement from the direction where the church building materials including cement were kept. From their hide-out, they saw the convicts carrying four bags of cement to Ackah’s house and were returning ostensibly to go and steal more when the two brothers emerged from their hiding place, rushed on them and managed to arrest Ali who was sent to the Kade police station where a report was made. Ali in his caution statement to the police denied the offence and explained that it was rather Ackah and Sumaila who went and stole the cement and kept them in Ackah’s house. On November 11, Ackah was arrested from his hideout. The prosecutor said efforts were being made to apprehend Sumaila.
