Better Ghana ICT Plan – 3000 Schools...To Receive Computers

An 11-member inter-ministerial committee on the Ghana Information Communication Technology (ICT) project was inaugurated in Accra yesterday. The committee, chaired by Dr Nii Narku Quaynor, Board Chairman of the National Information Technology Agency, would, among others things oversee the implementation of the newly instituted ICT project by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology. The project, dubbed; “The Better Ghana ICT is collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Communications and the GETFund. The pilot phase will take off in March this year, and will see about 3,000 computers distributed to individuals and schools nationwide. The computers will be assembled in Ghana by RLG Communication Company. The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Ms Sherry Ayittey said in modern usage, ICT acts to integrate technologies for environmental sustainability. “By using new technologies, the global community can be supported in their collaboration to preserve the environment in the long term,” she added. Ms. Ayittey said ICT is therefore viewed as a prerequisite for the development and the process of optimum adoption and diffusion of ICT education in Ghana. She said, the initiative will boost local content participation in the ICT education in Ghana. She said the initiative will boost local content participation in the ICT sector and save huge sums of foreign currency used for the importation of computers. The chairman commended the ministry for the trust reposed in them. The members include Mr. Gideon Quarcoo, deputy Minister of Communications, Mrs Agathea Gaisie Nkansah, director in charge of ICT, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Paul Asimenu, Director, Legal, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Dorothy Gordon, Director General, Kofi Annan ICT Centre, and Mr. Johnson Adasi, Ministry of Trade and Industries.
