President John Evans Atta Mills has acquired 12,000 acres of land at Namburugu in the Karaga District of Northern Region to start an agriculture estate made up of rice and maize. The project which is expected to commence in March 2011 will among other interventions create jobs for a substantial number of the youth in the Karaga district and beyond. Hon. Sulemana Hussein Issah, the Karaga District Chief Executive disclosed President Mills’ objective to Citi News during an inspection tour of some farmlands under the block farming project in the district. According to the Karaga DCE, President John Mills upon assumption of office in 2009 sent a delegation to the northern region on a land selection trip and that the Karaga district was what the team recommended for consideration. Analyzing the President’s vision, the chief of Karaga, Naa Mahama Adam released the 12,000 acres land at no cost for a maximum of 30 years. Hon. Sulemana Hussein proclaimed that when the company becomes operational in March 2011, it will be called Baymoni which will have a rice mill for processing the produce for ready market. The Karaga DCE thanked President John Mills for choosing Karaga for the project with the expectation that it will reduce drastically the district’s youth unemployment. He added that the company will attract more investors to Karaga and this in his estimation will improve the socio-economic wellbeing of Karaga residents. Hon. Sulemana Hussein however appealed to residents of Karaga to co-exist peacefully for government and its development partners to broaden the district’s economic fortune.
