The Right Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), has urged the church to provide the needed leadership to stop the growing ethnocentrism in the society. He said it was disturbing that the problem was even affecting the Church to the extent that some Christians think certain key positions should be the preserve of certain groups of people. Addressing the opening session of the National Ministers’ Conference of the PCG in Kumasi on Tuesday, Rt. Rev Prof Martey said the Bible frowns on discrimination in all its forms. He said the Church should therefore work hard to purge society of such unhelpful attitude and other negative practices, which were at variance with Christian values. The five-day conference being hosted by the Asante Presbytery of the Church is on the theme: “The Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit”. The Moderator denounced what he described as ‘dirty politics’ by some Presbyterians in the run-up to his election, and said, “I have forgiven all my detractors and accusers in the name of the almighty God.” He advised the ministers to live above reproach and submit themselves to the unadulterated word of God and apostolic teachings to spread the gospel. Rev Dr Fred Deegbe, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, lauded the PCG for positively influencing society through the provision of development projects in areas of health, education and agriculture. He asked the ministers to use the conference to take stock of their activities with the view to making remedies where they fell short in the performance of their duties. There were fraternal messages from the Catholic Church and other denominations.
