A woman reported to have stolen a two-week old baby boy from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on January 31, has been grabbed by the Korle-Bu Police. Jacenta Owusu Kwateng sold the baby to another woman for GH¢3OO. The District Commander in-charge of the Korle-Bu Police Station, ASP Abraham Apusiyine said, last Monday two women, Millicent Williams, 24, unemployed, and her aunt, Joyce Abeka, 42, reported to the police that, her baby had been stolen at the maternity ward of the hospital. Speaking to Times, he said Millicent went to the maternity block to see her doctor but she was told to come the next day when the doctor would be on duty. ASP Apusiyine said she took the opportunity to weigh her child at the Antenatal Department where she met Jacenta, aged 27, dressed in a nursing officer's uniform who promised to help her to see the doctor. He said Jacenta took her hospital card ostensibly, to go for her test result before seeing the doctor and asked the baby's mother to wait at the maternity block. ASP Apusiyine said, Jacenta went back to Millicent's aunt at the antenatal and told her that the doctor said she should bring the baby before he attends to Millicent. The aunt handed over the baby to Jacenta, but she escaped with the baby while Millicent was at the maternity block waiting for her to bring the test result. Having waited for some time, Millicent went back to the Antenatal Department to check on the baby, only to realize that Jacenta had escaped. ASP Apusiyine said the police later arrested Jacenta at her house at Laterbiokoshie and, she confessed stealing the baby and had sold him to a woman known as Aunty Atta for GH¢3OO at Dansoman last stop. The police traced Aunty Atta to Dansoman but her neighbours said she had travelled with the baby. According to the police, the neighbours said Atta had been posing as a pregnant woman and informed them two weeks ago that she was in labour and came home on January 31 with a baby. The police are searching for Atta to assist in their investigations.
