WAEC to release upheld results of private candidates

06 Feb 2011 641 news, education

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) says it has completed investigation into alleged malpractices in the Nov/Dec examination for private candidates and would soon release the remaining results. Candidates who took the examination at Agona Swedru, Winneba and Apam centers in Nov./Dec. last year had their results suspended for unspecified reasons. The Head of the Legal Department of WAEC Mr Fredrick Selby, who made this known at the Career Conference Programme organized by the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) gave details of the outcome of the investigations of examination. Mr Selby said candidates with no problems on their papers would have their results released and those with problems would have their results cancelled. He said ACT 719 of 2006 empowers WAEC to suspend or cancel the results of a candidate who misconducts himself or herself at an examination center. He cautioned students to prepare properly by learning well adding that candidates caught in examination malpractices could face a penalty of between 900 Ghana Cedis and 1,800 Ghana Cedis fines or a one-year imprisonment. Mr Godfred Addo, Senior Assistant Registrar of the Council said it is an offence for candidates to carry mobile phones to examination centre, adding that the Council would also not entertain copying among students. Mrs Elizabeth Appiah, Assistant Headmistress of Swedru School of Business said the programme was to advise the students to stop relying on getting leaked papers but rather to help them take their studies seriously. She said the school authorities have put in place measures including monthly examination of subjects and quiz to prepare students adequately for their examinations.
