Accra, Sept 20, GNA - Mr Tony Brown, a fisherman at La in Accra, has appealed to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to make available to fishermen modern fishing vessels at affordable cost. He said the use of canoes for fishing was outmoded and cumbersome and could not bring about the needed increase in fish supply, resulting in high cost of the commodity in markets throughout the country. Mr Brown, who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said MOFA must ensure that good fishing vessels were brought into the industry and put at the disposal of fishermen at bearable prices. On financial challenges, Mr Brown said sometimes loans granted to fishermen were very meagre and could hardly suffice for the purpose of improving their businesses. He, therefore, pleaded with the financial institutions to consider granting substantial loans to farmers to make them more productive. The fisherman said when government took a serious look into these challenges confronting the industry, there would be abundant fish in the country and prices would also come down to a reasonable level to meet the pockets of the ordinary Ghanaians.
