Ghana Must Rake Revenue From Submarine Fibre Optics

The Director General of the Ghana Kofi Annan centre of excellence in ICT Dorothy Gordon says Ghana stands to rake in huge revenue following the coming of submarine fibre optics to Africa. According to her, although the oil find will rake in massive revenue for Ghana, attention must also be given to other sectors that have the potential to increase revenue for the country. She said with the coming of the submarine fibre optics, the ICT sector now has so much potential. Currently, Africa is flooded in the sea of submarine fibre optic cables. There are at least eight undersea fibre optic cables, of which Ghana is a beneficiary of at least three. They are the SAT-3, Glo1, and Main-one. Madam Dorothy Gordon told Citi Business the submarine fibre optics will provide reliable and cheaper internet and telecommunication services amongst others to stakeholders. “For a long time now, whenever we do analysis of what it costs a Ghanaian business to run, we see that we are not competitive because the cost of internet within Ghana is not favorable comparable to that in other countries. So now that we have new cables coming into Ghana, that is the submarine cables which brings in huge additional capacity, it’s time we really looked at it and assess what is going to be the multiple effect of bringing in Bandwidth in Ghana and all the positive impact of the policy steps that have been taken today.”
