The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) and its allies, Generational Youth Movement (GYM), Progressive Nationalist Forum (PNF), Labour unions, trade unions, and others will in a few hours’ time embark on the planned demonstration in Accra in protest against the recent hike in the fuel prices and the economic hardship in the country. The Demonstration, tagged “AHOKYERE” will see citizens and members of AFAG in red t-shirts and red bands walk across the principal streets of Accra. Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning show, AFAG’s Director for International Affairs, Martin Adjei Mensah expressed the group’s disappointment in the President Atta-Mills led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for introducing more increases on petroleum products to add to the already suffering Ghanaians, and therefore will be hitting the streets tomorrow to draw government’s attention to the hardships Ghanaians are going through. According to him, they will use the opportunity drum home the need for government to honour its campaign promise of total freedom from high taxes and fuel price hikes. “President Mills promised us and told us we are going to create trust between him and the people and his policies will yield fruit and bring comfort to the people but it is not like that, poverty is swallowing us up so he should turn back and look the promise he made to Ghanaians,” he noted. He added that the conditions on the ground now are totally different from the promises of the governing NDC. Touching on demonstration scheduled for tomorrow, Mr. Adjei Mensah disclosed that all the necessary formalities with the police has been completed and hoped for a peaceful protest march. He cautioned all Protestants not to don the colours of any political party during the activity.
