Mr. Kwame Ampofo-Twumasi, Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South has urged members of Nkoranza Students Union to regard themselves as partners in development and apply their knowledge and experiences in initiating development programmes for the benefit of the people. Mr. Ampofo-Twumasi, who is Deputy Minister of Energy, made the call at the annual general meeting and handing over ceremony of the union at Nkoranza. He said since students were regarded as role models, it was incumbent of them to sensitize parents on the importance of education and encourage the younger generation to take their education seriously. Mr. Ampofo-Twumasi advised the students to study challenges that confronted the youth in education and initiate pragmatic measures to help address them. Mr. Kwabena Agyemang-Badu, Nkoranza District Director of Education, commended the students for embarking on community sensitization activities during vacations and supporting the promotion of education among the youth. He disclosed that about 20 students from Nkoranza traditional area had been provided with 12 million cedis from the Okatakyie Agyeman Kudom IV Educational Endowment Fund and said plans were advanced to support more students. Mr. Agyemang-Badu stressed the need for the students to be cautious about their sexual habits to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS. He noted that the major challenge facing education in the district was lack of accommodation for teachers and called on the District Assembly to assist in providing bungalows for them. Mr. Richard Asare-Baah, in-coming President of the union appealed to parents to invest their resources in the education of their children to become useful citizens in future. He advised students in the area to eschew negative practices and concentrate on their books to achieve high academic laurels. In a welcoming address, Mr. Solomon Adu, an executive of the union, called on the District Assembly to support and encourage brilliant but needy students and commended Mr. Agyemang-Badu for offering the union with a means of transport in its educational activities. Other new executive members of the union are Mr. Isaac Afum Twum, vice president, Mr. Obeng Kwame, secretary, Mr. Sakyi Boamah, organizer and Mr. Badu Elisha, treasurer.
