NGO Wants President Mills To Discontinue Amina's Trial

A Northern NGO is asking President Mills to halt the ongoing trial of Amina Mohammed. Amina is standing trial for causing fear and panic and deceit of a public officer, under Section 208 of the Criminal Code, after reporting an alleged mass rape and assault on a Tamale-bound bus by armed robbers. The NGO, Northern Youth Peace Development has threatened to cause disaffection for the Mills administration if Amina Mohammed is not released immediately. It claims Amina Mohammed is being tortured mentally though she contributed to the victory of President Mills. Executive Director of the NGO, Prince Hardi Adams told Citi News they want the President to direct the Attorney General’s Department to throw the case out of Court. “We are only appealing to the President to help so that Amina is released as soon as possible. The case is in Court but the President can still order the State Attorney to withdraw the case” he said. It will be recalled that on November 16 2010, the judge presiding over the trial warned the prosecution that she would be forced to freeze the case if it is not completed in time. Mrs. Justice Patience Mills-Tetteh gave the warning when she granted the prosecution’s request for another adjournment in the trial. The Police have described Amina’s report as a “hoax,” while the driver of the bus on which the alleged gory incident happened has denied any such event occurred. However, some passengers on the bus have confirmed that the said incident did occur.
