A non-governmental organization, Infant Malaria Prevention Foundation (IMPF), has donated items for the control of malaria valued at GH¢10,000 to the Anum-Asamankese cluster of schools at Asamankese. The items included 500 treated mosquito nets, chemicals, spraying machines and teaching aids on malaria prevention. Making the donation, the chairperson of the foundation, Mrs Rebecca Akuffo-Addo, wife of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, said the Foundation was established to raise awareness about the seriousness of malaria and to bring relief to communities where malaria accounts for the highest mortality rate among pregnant women, infants and children. The donation was in response to a general appeal by the school authorities last year for help to enable them control malaria in the area. Mrs Akuffo-Addo said her organization aimed at ensuring that some identified communities were freed from malaria, adding that she would continue to support the schools with such items until the intended objective is achieved. She said malaria was preventable and that people should try to clear their surroundings of weeds and filth. The District Chief Executive for Upper West Akyem, Mr Kwabena Sintim-Aboagye, expressed worry about the refusal of some members of the community to participate in communal labour and cautioned that very soon the assembly would take legal action against such people. He said records available at the Asamankese Government Hospital indicated that, last year, the Out Patients Department of the hospital recorded high rate of malaria cases and attributed the situation to the of filth in the district
