President John Evans Atta Mills on Sunday July 10, gave the assurance that government would institute measures to check the menace of homosexuality and lesbianism that were gradually gaining grounds within the social fabric of the country. He said those acts were contrary not only to the word of God but also the cultural norms and values of the Ghanaian society. "The word of God is clear and unambiguous, what is right is right, what is wrong is wrong", President Mills said. He said one had no moral basis to justify such negative practices and any other actions offensive to the nation's customs and conventions. President Mills was responding to concerns raised by Reverend Joseph Bosoma, Pastor in-charge of the Sunyani Central Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. This was when the President and his entourage attended a thanksgiving service following his landslide victory as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2012 Election. The event coincided with the launch of the Centenary Anniversary Celebration of the Boys' Brigade of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, which President Mills happened to be a Life Patron. The President on Saturday decisively defeated Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, former First Lady, at the party's special national delegates congress held in Sunyani to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in the next Presidential Election. President Mills said "All power belongs to God so if any human enterprise ends successfully it is only fitting and proper to give thanks to the Almighty God". Rev. Bosoma, the host Pastor, appealed to the President to address a number of concerns that were becoming social canker that could become dangerous to both the present and future generations of the country. He mentioned among others the engagement of the youth and even some adults in homosexuality and lesbianism, and pleaded to government to come out with stringent laws to make those practices unlawful. The Pastor warned that if preventive measures were not taken, the situation could result in misfortunes and disasters in the country just as it happened to Sodom and Gomorrah as told in the Bible, because "these are abomination in the eyes of the Almighty God". Rev. Bosoma condemned improper dressing especially wearing of short skirts and open-chest blouses by females to expose their breasts saying the practices were due to wrong adaptation of foreign culture. He observed that the liberalization of the airwaves had paved the way for some radio stations to advertise some negative entertainment and business commercials. Rev. Nii Blebo Anang, Brigade Secretary, Ghana Council, delivering a sermon on the theme: The fruits of God's Word", called on Christians to prepare themselves adequately for the propagation of the Word of God. He said that wherever the Word of God thrived democracy prevailed, and that there could be no" Better Ghana Agenda" without the word of God. President Mills donated GHC 2000.00 as thanksgiving offering to the Church.
