Mr. Paul Baffoe-Ansah, Nkoranza District Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers, has said the association would take on any company that would cause deductions to be made in the salaries of members without their knowledge. He said the practice had become rampant in the country and it was time it was curtailed. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza, Mr. Baffoe-Ansah said studies had revealed that some unscrupulous persons managed to take the pay slips of staff members to companies for either cash or goods and authorized that the repayment should be processed through monthly deductions at the Accountant General’s Department. Mr. Baffoe-Ansah said a number of teachers had complained that even though they had not collected any credit facilities, some companies had caused deductions to be made in their salaries. “Mr. Kwadwo Twine, a teacher, showed his November/December pay slips for last year to me and Ray Ray Frontline Company Limited had deducted GH¢ 23 from his salary even though he had not entered into any transaction with the company”, he said. Mr. Baffoe-Ansah said similar complaints had come from the districts and GNAT had started compiling names of the affected teachers to be able to trace the source of the deal so the perpetrators would face the full rigours of the law. He appealed to district and municipal directors of education to ensure that pay slips got to teachers directly.
