Mr. Enoch Osei-Sarfo, Kintampo South District Director of Education, has urged schools to give equal attention to sports as other subjects in the curriculum for the complete development of pupils and students. He was addressing teachers, students and parents at the district’s third annual inter-circuit games and athletics competition at Krabonso. The district director stressed that sports festivals had gained tremendous attention the world over because of the immense benefits that sportsmen and women were enjoying in their lives. “Parents and teachers must therefore encourage pupils and students to take more interest in sporting activities to enhance their careers as professionals”, Mr. Osei-Sarfo added. He cautioned the participating students against immoral behaviours such as sexual adventurism and alcoholism during the competition to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS. Mr. Yaw Adjei-Duffour, District Chief Executive, advised the participants to take the competition seriously so that they could be picked to participate in the the regional sports festival. He urged them to learn from the shining examples of Ghanaian football stars as Michael Essien, Baffour Gyan, Stephen Appiah, Adwoa Bayor and others and aspire to gain national and international recognition. The DCE paid special tribute to the late Baba Yara of Black Stars fame, a citizen of Kintampo, whose sterling prowess in his career led to the sports stadium in Kumasi being named after him. Mr. Adjei-Duffour commended the exploits of Kwasi Owusu, popularly called “Power House” during his playing days, a former captain of the national team and also a citizen of Kintampo, for his immense contributions to the development of soccer in the country. Mr. Ameyaw Yahaya, district sports organizer, said Kintampo North, Kintampo South and Nkoranza educational districts would meet as a zone to form a team for this year’s festival to be held in Techiman.
