Educationist Calls For Strategic Plans To Help Students

An educationist has urged heads of senior high schools to initiate strategic plans to help students pass the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASCE), to enable them gain admission into tertiary institutions. Mr. Kwabena Agyemang-Badu, Nkoranza District Director of Education, who made the call at the general meeting of Techiman Students Union at Techiman, expressed worry that many students failed Mathematics and English Language in the WASCE. The District Director of Education, who is also chairman of the Board of Governors of the Asuogyaman Senior High School at Aworowa, near Techiman, advised students to read novels and to take Integrate Science, English Language and Mathematics, the core subjects, seriously, so that they could pass them at first examination sitting. He urged parents to enrol their children in the school and advised guidance and counselling coordinators to guide students in the selection of subjects for their final examinations. Mr Adjei Kuffour, the Director of Good Shepherd International School at Techiman, expressed regret about the rate of alcoholism among students in the area, and cautioned the youth to avoid social vices that could affect their development. Mr Appau Karikari, National President of the union, said members had contributed cash for the purchase of books for the Municipal Library at Techiman. He appealed to the Techiman Municipal Assembly to provide the union with an office to facilitate its activities. Mr Karikari thanked Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, for donating a motorbike to the association, to facilitate the movements of members. Mr Owusu Boateng, in-coming president, said the group would educate the people on the need to send their children to school to enable them acquire knowledge and skills required for development. Mr Antwi Boasiako, headmaster of the Techiman Senior High School, commended the union for initiating plans to enhance the welfare of members and to promote the development of the municipality. The newly elected executive members of the union were Mr. George Gyan, vice president, Mr. Hergins Adofo Yeboah, Secretary and Ms Hanna Adom Ameyaw, treasurer. The others were Mr. Simon Adonaura, organizer, Mr. Evans Kuran, public relations officer and Ms. Charlotte Twi Yeboah, women’s organizer.
