The Electoral Commission has barred the Ghana National Party from holding its planned National Delegates’ Congress. According to the commission the GNP did not go through the right democratic procedures in choosing its constituency executives who would congregate into a congress. It was supposed to organise regional congresses to elect its executive, but it failed to do so warranting the intervention of the EC. The GNP draws its membership mainly from the diaspora and had slated its National Delegate’s Congress for Saturday, March 29, 2008, to choose a flagbearer and national executives. A co-founder of the party, Ofori Ampofo who confirmed the news told Joy News says it has for now postponed the congress indefinitely. Still on congresses, the Director of Operations of the EC, Mr Albert Kofi Arhin has advised the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) to satisfy all the rules of the commission before organising its congress. He said the EC will stop the party from holding its National Delegates Congress if it realises that it did not prganise regional congresses. But the Interim National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Issaka told Joy news that it had fulfilled the requirement of the EC. The DFP says it will be holding its delegates congress next week to elect a flag bearer and substantive national officers.
