The Eastern Naval Command has arrested two tuna vessels- MV Rico Siete and MV Sea Plus at the Tema Fishing Harbour, for fishing illegally. The Command has also seized a total of 24 generator sets and about 30 light bulbs, illegally utilised for fishing by canoe and on-shore fishing vessels. Commodore Albert Addison, Flag Officer Commanding the Naval Command, made this known in Tema on Thursday when Nii Amasa Namoale, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of Fisheries visited the Naval Base. He said the navy would continue to deploy its resources in the most effective manner, to ensure that the country’s fishery resources were exploited to the maximum benefit of the citizenry. He said the navy would offer protection to law-abiding fisher folks. Nii Namoale commended the navy and the Ghana Police Service for enforcing the Fisheries Law. He warned fishermen against pair trawling and said those caught engaging in the act would be prosecuted. Mr Mike Akyeampong, Chairman of the Fisheries Commission, urged the fisher folks to engage in sustainable fishing.
