Yaw Amoah, an 18-year-old cobbler in Kumasi was on Thursday sentenced to 18 months in jail by the Ashanti New Town District Court in Kumasi for stealing mobile phone chips and recharge units amounting to GH¢100. He admitted the offence and was convicted on his own plea. Police Inspector Hannah Acheampong told the court, presided over by Mr S.K. Achina, that both convict and complainant, one Yaa Nyantakyiwaa, lived at Ahenema-Kokoben near Kumasi. He said the complainant was a vendor in phone chips and kept her items at a shop where the accused also kept his shoes after close of work. The prosecution said on January 22 this year, the complainant kept the phone chips and rechargeable units at the usual place and went home around 1800 hours. The court heard that the convict went there later and stole the items and in an attempt to sell them at a reduced price, a witness in the case, became suspicious. The witness raised an alarm and Amoah was arrested and sent to the Central Police Station where he was charged after investigations. The items have since been retrieved from convict.
