Children Urged To Take Up Reading As A Habit

Nii Kojo Amponsah III, chief of Kwashiekuma, near Amasaman in the Ga West District has appealed to parents and guardians to prevail upon their children to take up reading as a habit to enhance quality education in the area. He also drew their attention to the important role of education in the nation's development and urged them to send their children to school for the benefit of the community. Nii Kojo Amponsah said this when he commissioned a library project at the weekend at Kwashiekuma. Nii Amponsah said no nation could develop with a mass of illiterate people, adding that, to take a driving license of late, one had to produce his or her certificate hence the need for everyone to cultivate the habit of reading to enhance teaching and learning in the community. He appealed to other identifiable organizations to donate generously towards education in the area. Mr and Mrs Kirt Bromley, of Book for Africa Library Project, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in the US, who provided the facility and stocked it with 3,100 books value at GH¢100,000 commended the people of Kwashiekuma for accepting the project. Mr Bromley advised junior high school students in the area to set high standards of performance and moral conduct to help them in their studies, adding that; "you may go through difficult times but do persevere and you will definitely smile at the end." He said Book for Africa Project had always sought to bring education to the doorsteps of the rural people and Kwashiekuma was the 40th village and first in the Greater Accra Region in Ghana that had benefited from the gesture. He appealed to the teachers and schools in the area to send their children to the library to read at least one hour a day. Mr Samuel Nii Aryeetey Attoh, Member of Parliament for the area, who chaired the function, said it was government policy that every community took active part in the running of its educational activities and commended those who contributed, especially Mrs Harriet Duah, native of the area and a lecturer at the Ghana Medical School. The books cover subjects in science and health, English, geography, social science, economics and business as well as JSS and children's books.
