The United States President, George W. Bush has dispelled speculations that the US has an ulterior motive for seeking to establish a military command in Africa. Mr Bush said the US was not considering positioning military equipment in Africa and Ghana for that matter for any mischievous reasons. Answering questions from journalists at a joint news conference with President Kufuor at the Castle, the US president said his country had not even made up its mind yet on the issue. “This is just a new concept and I am not in Ghana to try to convince you to accept military offices here”, he stressed. He said the proposed military command was an attempt to make US military capabilities relevant to Africa’s development. The two leaders also stressed the need to explore and adopt new strategies in fighting deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. President Kufuor said the US had made a new pledge to support research in areas of combating the scourge of malaria and other venerable diseases. Meanwhile the wife of the visiting US President, Laura Bush has been visiting some basic schools in Accra.
