The 2008 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for final Junior High School (JHS) students got off to a smooth start in the Tema Metropolis on Monday without any incident, officials have said. The students comported themselves and adhered to examination rules and regulations, earning them the commendation of the invigilators and supervisors, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) learnt. Supervisors at eight examination centres in the Metropolis told the 'B', and Community Eight Number One Basic School centre. The rest were Tema SHS centres 'A', 'B', 'C' and St Paul Methodist JHS centre. The supervisors expressed the hope that the students will maintain their comportment throughout the one-week period of the examination. The supervisors at Tema SHS centre 'A' and Community Eight Number One centre, which had the physically challenged among the candidates, called on the authorities to provide facilities to ensure the safety of people with disabilities during examinations. Mr Alex Antiaye, Tema SHS centre 'A' Supervisor observed that a physically challenged girl who rode in a wheelchair to the centre had to be carried into the hall because she could not ride over the stairway. At the Twedaase JHS centre, all 227 candidates, including 98 girls turned up for the examination, unlike Chemu centre 'A' which recorded one absentee out of a total of 269 candidates. Chemu centre 'B' had all its 290 registered students from four schools present while Community Eight number One Basic School centre recorded two absentees out of 283 registered students. Tema SHS centres 'A', 'B' and 'C', as well as St Paul Methodist JHS had all the candidates in attendance.
