Mr. Reginald Sackey, Assembly member for the Essam electoral area in the Birim Central Municipal Assembly, has decried recent involvement of students in lawlessness in the country. He said lawlessness was gaining root among students' activities in our towns and villages. He was addressing a meeting of Senior High School students and Junior High School pupils from the adjoining smaller towns and villages who had converged at Essam on Sunday. The assembly member enumerated a series of cases, including stealing, defilement, assault and robbery as some of the negative activities in which students indulged themselves and stated that unless they changed their habits, they would not grow up to be good citizens. Mr. Sackey called for concerted efforts to instil sound moral values in the youth. According to him, the incidents of robbery should be of great concern to all, because they pointed to a rapid deterioration in the moral fibre of the society. He called on the church and parents to be more proactive and ensure that their teachings impact positively on their congregation and children. He reminded parents and guardians that they had a responsibility to "teach a child the way he should go so that, when he grows up, he will not depart from it". Mr. Sackey noted that since; "education brings progress and development", parents and teachers alike had the onerous responsibility to ensure the children's upkeep. He also advised communities in the municipality to focus on small economic ventures to provide more employment avenues to the youth, in order to minimise social unrest and agitation among them. He stated that children were the nation's future leaders and that if they were denied parental care, it would not augur well for all.
