The Ashanti Regional Police Command has called on the public, especially motorists, to be more alert amidst the increasing sophistication of car jacking syndicates operating in the Kumasi metropolis. They should remain vigilant and security conscious, a press statement signed by Police Chief Inspector Mohammed Tanko of the Public Affairs Unit, on Thursday advised. It noted that within the last two months, “hardly does a day go by” without the police receiving reports about a car having been snatched from the driver. The criminals usually parade themselves as passengers, hire taxi cabs and lure the drivers to isolated areas, where they seize the vehicles at gun point. At times, they also lurk around the residence of their victims, attack and snatch the cars as they arrive home. Vehicles that are of attraction to them included; Toyota, Opel, four-wheel pick-ups, KIA and other flashy vehicles. The statement said it had also been found that some taxi drivers collude with the criminals and share in the booty. The police vowed to deal with the situation and bring the criminals to justice as it appealed for public support and assistance. The Command had drawn up a comprehensive plan including a reward package for those who volunteer information leading to the arrest of the miscreants.
