MDC Asks UN, AU to Intervene in Zimbabwe Crisis

Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in Ghana yesterday to push for the United Nations (UN) to intervene to end his country’s election crisis. Ban was one of the leaders who raised the lateral crisis in Zimbabwe demanding that the presidential results be released. He warned that it would deteriorate even further with serious consequences if the international community doesn’t take action. UN secretary spokesperson Michele Montas says that opposition leader Tsvangirai has complained about the deadlock and the deterioration of the humanitarian and political situation in the country. “He has appealed for an intervention by the African Union (AU) and the UN, since he feels that there is no progress in the efforts made by Southern African Development Community (SADC).” Montas says Ban reiterated his deep concerns as the situation in Zimbabwe is still not resolved. She says: “Ban will also consult with the president of the AU on possible ways forward.” Tsvangirai claims that he has won the election and there is no need for a run off. He also accuses Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe of planning to rig the results. By Thami dickkson
