Ghana’s solo artiste, Tinny has disclosed that he does not think Nigerians doing music in Ghana can overtake Ghanaian music stars. He was speaking in an exclusive interview with showghana’s Ignatius Annor. When asked about the recent speculation that the Ghanaian music scene is being saturated with Nigerian music as witnessed some months ago when the nation’s movie industry nearly collapsed with the influx of Nigerian movies, he said, “I don’t see anything wrong with the breakthrough of Nigerian music on our market and I don’t think they can overtake us in Ghana.” He continued by saying, “I believe if one is a hiplife artiste and do their job very well with hard work and professionalism you will definitely be known for that”. When asked about the fact that Nigerian music is creeping slowly but steadily into the Ghanaian market because of the shoddy work and desperation on the part of some Ghanaian musicians, he said, “Of course yes! Plenty! Some of us are not producing quality music; they just get up, record a song and come out with it and pay “payola” for disc jockeys to play. This I think is killing the market”. He attributed the menace to lack of quality producers in Africa in general and Ghana in particular, stating that most of the time, an artiste has to produce, manage and promote his or her own work. “I would go back to the kind of music we used to do and enjoyed in the past. With the likes of Hammer of the Last2 fame, I don’t think we are doing Hiplife as it was in the good old days,” he observed.
