NASTY TAY, a London-based Ghanaian artiste, has announced his presence again on the Ghanaian music scene with his second album titled, ‘Maa San Ababa’. Among some of the interesting songs on the album are ‘Obolo’ featuring Ex-Doe, ‘Something good’, ‘Taadi’ and ‘Vibrate’ among others. The title track, ‘Maa San aba’ features Humble. All the songs on the album, sung in Twi, have clear messages about women and their emotions. Unlike most albums which cross the thresholds without achieving any feat, the 12-track album which has dominating hiphop rhythms, is estimated to be an exception. A member of the artiste’s management, Marshal, told Beatwaves: “Nasty targets to break into the international music market but would not do that without first making it big in his homeland, Ghana.” This, he explained, was why “Nasty sung in Twi for his local fans to recognize him, instead of singing in other mediums that command easy international audience understanding”. Born in Takoradi, Nasty who is also known as Roger K. Tay, started his musical career at the age of 13 when he moved to Sweden, before finally settling in London. He was first in love with hiphop after listening to artistes such as Jay Z, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, and Kool Moe Dee among others. Through their influence he started to compose his own lyrics with friends. Later, he started performing at schools and night clubs through which he formed a group called, ‘Outstanding’ with his friends. The members of the group somewhere along the line influenced him to change his style. With this new R&B style he had the opportunity to perform at big events in Denmark, Malmo and Gothenburg (Sweden). He recorded his first hip-life album in 2000 with the support of highlife legend, Ben Brako.
