Adoley Fights For Physically Challenged

07 Jul 2008 521 entertainment, gossip

Winner of this year’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful reality show, Sara Naa Adoley Addo, who promised to fight for the rights of the physically challenged in society, is leaving no stone unturned to realize her dream. The beauty queen, born to deaf and dumb parents, called on the government and Ghana Education Service (GES) to assist schools of deaf and dumb with basic logistics. Speaking to BEATWAVES in an interview in Accra, Adoley urged the GES to include sign language in the educational syllabus to “bridge the communication gap between us and our fellow citizens who could neither speak nor hear. At least this would help our children appreciate and relate with our deaf and dumb freely, without the usual disdain meted out to them,” she noted. The beauty queen said government should also endeavour to implement the Disability Law which would create an enabling environment for the deaf and dumb. Though the law had been passed, 24-year-old Adoley who drove home PHC’s Tata Safara 4X4 car, and a brand new Tata Indigo Saloon car and GH¢3,000 apart from other mouthwatering prices after winning the pageant, said the delay in implementing the law was tantamount to depriving a segment of society of their rights. She appealed to government “to allot at least two percent of the various public offices to the physically challenged”. She disclosed that while growing up she endured a lot of stigmatization due to her parent’s conditions. However, implementing the Disability Law well, according to her, would save other children from similar ordeals. Adoley said she felt blessed to be able to communicate with both the deaf and dumb as well as ordinary human beings and she wants all Ghanaians to also do so; hence her call on the GES to include sign language in its syllabus. Sarah Naa Adoley, last week paid a courtesy call on the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C. Quaye at his residence in Accra as part of her campaign for the rights of the disabled. In a chat, the Regional Minister commended her for winning the crown and said what made her success more unique was the fact that she did not allow her humble background to be a hindrance. Sheikh I.C. Quaye asked Adoley to be a good ambassador of Ghanaian tradition and culture and prove that she was a total Ghanaian and not just a Ga. He promised the Regional Coordinating Council’s support for her project on the disabled. Adoley, on her part thanked the minister and all those who supported her during the contest. She called for further support from individuals and organizations towards her project. Hajia Salamatu Quaye, on behalf of the Regional Minister, presented a gift to Adoley.
