The Mayor of Accra Alfred Vanderpuije says the shift system in basic schools in the metropolis has ended although construction works to create new classroom and expand others are yet to be completed. The Mayor embarked on an initiative to end the shift system which compel pupils to spend just four hours in school instead of eight hours. The shift system is a situation where schools are divided into two groups, and one group goes to school during morning session and the other comes in the afternoon to use the same facilities. This arises as result of lack of enough classroom facilities for the pupils. Mr. Vanderpuije says the construction of new buildings will be completed by Wednesday September 30, 2010. He commended private individuals, schools and churches that have released their properties to the A.M.A to accommodate more pupils. “The shit system is ending. The schools have made arrangements and they are engaging the children on full day. There are indeed a few constructions that have to be completed in few days time. The children are in the schools for full day and once the construction works are done they will be released into the buildings” he said “We appreciate the gesture and collaboration that exists with the private owners of these structures and the schools. I don’t think there is going to come a time when they will demand their buildings because we have engaged those premises for one year within which time we would be constructing our Millennium City Schools project to permanently house the pupils" he noted.
