The Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Dr Alhaji Asuma Banda, has advised the management of the University, to position the Music Department to promote indigenous African Music to attract students from America and the Caribbean. Alhaji Bandah said the promotion of African music by the Music Department would not only bring in more students but also rake in more income to enable the university to expand its infrastructural base. Dr Alhaji Banda made the appeal at his first meeting with the authorities and management of the University of Education, Winneba. He said the promotion of indigenous music by the department would encourage people of African-decent in the Diaspora to trace the roots of their ancestors. He said the indigenous African music is highly enjoyed in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world because of their values and educative nature. The Chancellor said as much as the world is being driven by technology, the culture of the African must be protected and projected by all, especially in academia. Alhaji Banda said that in as much as the department should promote indigenous African music, it should also attach importance to the protection and promoting of the rich Ghanaians arts and culture and encourage the students to learn them instead of copying foreign ones.
