Virgin Atlantic has hinted of plans to recruit Ghanaians into its crew. Currently its crew is made up of only foreign nationals. The airline has made similar moves in other countries such as Nigeria, India and Japan among others where locals make up a potion of the crew. The airline which has been on the Ghanaian market since May 2010 currently flies between London Heathrow and Ghana. Accra is the airline’s fifth African destination, after Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa, Lagos in Nigeria, and Nairobi in Kenya. Early on the airline announced an expansion of its flights between London and Ghana during this winter’s peak travel period. In an interview with Citi Business head of sales and marketing of Virgin Atlantic, Paul Dickenson said the airline is yet to decide on when exactly it will begin the process of recruiting Ghanaians into its crew. “We fly to quite a few places around the world, where we have local cabin crew making up a portion of our total crew. Typically about two-thirds of our crew will be UK based, and maybe a third of our crew locally based in each destination. “What we’d like to look into, is the possibility, going forward, could we establish a similar set up within Ghana to put some Ghanaian crew onto the Virgin Atlantic flights. We are not ready to do that just now, but our track record shows over time we have managed to do that and give career opportunities to people from the local market. “We don’t have any immediate timeline, but as soon as we do know we will let everybody know.”
