The Royal Adjovia Clan of the Anlo Traditional Area is meeting this week to deliberate on whether to accept or reject Francis Nyonyo Agboada also known as Togbe Sri’s abdication as the king of Anlo. His kingship has been disputed by a faction claiming they do not recognise him as their traditional ruler. The dispute over Agboada’s installation led to a crisis on November 1, 2007 which claimed five lives including a policeman on duty in the area to keep the peace. A few weeks later Nyonyo Agboada was reported by the Daily Graphic to have said that he would abdicate for the sake of peace. In the Monday January 14, 2008 issue of the newspaper, it was reported that he has abdicated the throne. Spokesperson of the Royal Adjovia Clan, Napoleon Agboada say they will meet to take a decision on the matter. Speaking to Joy News, Chris Ackumey, spokesman for the opposing faction, say Nyonyo’s decision is long overdue and congratulates him for the action. He however considers the decision a withdrawal and not abdication since they have never considered him a duly enthroned king of Anlo. He congratulates Agboada for displaying statesmanship in the interest of the Anlo state. He says the action is appreciable. He said the people of Anlo will need Agboada’s support to develop anloland. And if he has agreed to withdraw, they would be willing to work with him. According to Ackumey, he is happy that Agboada has allowed reason to prevail in the matter.
